Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor, submits to Pope Gregory VII arriving at Canossa on January 25, 1077, seeking absolution. The Pope ordered that he be refused entry. Henry waited at the gates, for three days, until finally was allowed to come in on January 28, 1077.
