Emperor Otto III establishes the Bishopric of Gniezno, Poland, as an archbishopric. during the Congress of Gniezno, c. March 7–11,1000. The act made the Polish church independent from the German church hierarchy, a major achievement for Poland and its ruler, Bolesław the Brave.
The act was rooted in Otto III's vision of a rejuvenated, unified Christian Europe, where Poland could play a significant role, even while it caused tension with German bishops. Gaudenty was appointed as the first metropolitan bishop, answering directly to the Pope.
