Seljuk Turks captured Baghdad on December 15, 1055 and seized political and military control, reducing the the Abbasid Caliphs to be religious leaders for over two centuries, leading to the decline of the Abbasid Caliphate. which lasted until the final takeover of the Abbasid Caliphate by the Mongols in 1258.
