Israel officially withdraws from the Gaza Strip after 38 years of occupation as the last Israeli soldiers left Gaza on September 12, 2005. Roughly 9,000 Jewish residents were relocated, and settlements were demolished. While internal control was handed to the Palestinian Authority, Israel continued to control access to the Gaza Strip.
