Pompey the Great, (Latin, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus), is assassinated . A general and statesman of the Roman Republic, he played a significant role in the transformation of Rome from republic to empire and became a contender to Caesar for the leadership of the Rome State leading to the Caesar Civil War where he was defeated at the Battle of Pharsalus.
