Michelangelo's Pietà sculpture in St. Peter's Basilica was attacked and severely damaged. The assailant, Laszlo Toth, a Hungarian-born Australian geologist, used a hammer to strike the statue fifteen times, declaring he was Jesus Christ.
He caused considerable damage, including severing Mary's left arm at the elbow and damaging her nose. Ten months after the attack, the painstaking restoration was completed and the Pietà went back on display but now behind a bulletproof glass. More
