It is cold,
and dreary.
Why then are
my eyes teary?

Away you go.
away from here.
Stay you loose,
have a beer.

People I know,
are unlike me,
they are patient
and think free.

I was born,
a simple man,
with simple tastes,
living a simple plan.

I have learned,
through years, many,
the finer things,
in life, are plenty.

Do you understand,
as I try to say,
I'll love you always,
until I have gone away.

Dodging bullets,
yes, it's what I did,
my luck is all gone,
tested positive for Covid.

NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day:

A mere 56 million light-years distant toward the southern constellation Fornax, NGC 1365 is an enormous barred spiral galaxy about 200,000 light-years in diameter. That's twice the size of our own barred spiral Milky Way. This sharp image from the James Webb Space Telescope's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) reveals stunning details of this magnificent spiral in infrared light. Webb's field of view stretches about 60,000 light-years across NGC 1365, exploring the galaxy's core and bright newborn star clusters. The intricate network of dusty filaments and bubbles is created by young stars along spiral arms winding from the galaxy's central bar. Astronomers suspect the gravity field of NGC 1365's bar plays a crucial role in the galaxy's evolution, funneling gas and dust into a star-forming maelstrom and ultimately feeding material into the active galaxy's central, supermassive black hole.

When I finally reached the ripe old age of 65, my nanny state sent me a notice that I could sign up for national health care, what some might call socialist medicine.  Not me, I call it health care, paid for through my taxes over the years along with Social Security, what some would call a socialist give-away, but once again, not me.  I call it my retirement fund.  My nest egg for old age.  But to tell you the absolute truth, call it whatever you want.  And if you hate socialist programs, by all means, turn the money down and buy your own damn health care insurance.

For awhile I thought I understood finally what the Golden Years meant.  Freedom from going bankrupt from the next health care crisis, if nothing else.  That, of course, was before the phone started ringing.  I have a landline, the precursor to a flip phone and the subsequent generations of cellular gizmos.  My landline doesn’t have caller ID, something so far I refuse to pay for since I’m willing to answer my phone and be surprised who might be calling.  At any hour of the day or night.  I remember when we were on a party line here on the South End.  Cost an additional buck a mile from the phone headquarters up in Mt. Vernon to get a private line.  Per month.  We endured the teenage girl and her mom for about a year before taking our grocery money to pay for a phone we could actually use occasionally.  And that may be the case with caller ID eventually.

We get calls starting early in the morning and into the evening.  They’re 90% from ‘Medicare Providers’.  And they’re 90% non-human.  They might ask how we are and if you answer, their programmed machine intelligence launches into their pitch.  I used to keep answering the robot until a human was connected in order to finalize whatever transaction they had for me, then I would request they take me off their list.  The next day, same time, the Hi, I’m Amy message would come on, repeated later in the day, repeated until you have lost your mind and found yourself talking ugly to the robot.  The robot, thinking you just answered its last query, moves on to the next part of the sequence.

This is not what I had in mind for my Golden Years.  What this is is the capitalist health care system piggybacking my Medicare.  They’ll send me some box of health care stuff free of charge, so they say, and I assume the government will reimburse them.  Maybe folks are happy to get free medical stuff.  Right now I have all the medical stuff I want.  Band aids mostly and a bottle of expired aspirin, but all I need. If I thought ditching Medicare would stop these incessant phone calls from Amy the Android, I might vote to repeal Obamacare and go back to the wild west of the American healthcare system, but somehow I suspect Amy and her legions of robot telemarketers would fill the void until having a phone with or without caller ID would be senseless.

Course, the peace and quiet might be worth it.

The Skeeter Daddle Diaries

NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day:

While scanning the skies for near earth objects Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky first imaged the meter-sized space rock now cataloged as 2023 CX1 on 12 February 2023 at 20:18:07 UTC. That was about 7 hours before it impacted planet Earth's atmosphere. Its predicted trajectory created a rare opportunity for meteor observers and a last minute plan resulted in this spectacular image of the fireball, captured from the Netherlands as 2023 CX1 vaporized and broke up over northern France. Remarkably it was Sárneczky's second discovery of an impacting asteroid, while 2023 CX1 is only the seventh asteroid to be detected before being successfully predicted to impact Earth. It has recently become the third such object from which meteorites have been recovered. This fireball was witnessed almost 10 years to the day following the infamous Chelyabinsk Meteor flash.

You said you would go with me,
I know I would try.
For all of your promises
your statement was a lie.

Your words, were appealing,
your charm did amaze.
You swayed my emotions.
What was the phrase?

I'll always love you,
as you said it to me,
It's what I will do,
but you left when I went to sea.

Blue eyes or Hazel,
it remains to be seen,
if it is ok to be happy,
if they aren't green?

What kind of theory,
what type of dread,
compels me to write,
about words in my head?

I wish I could tell you
but I'm unclear to say,
do I write this dribble,
before I go away?

It's 430 am,
why am I here.
I need to sleep,
as dawning is near.

A hodge-podge of words,
spill from my head,
down my arm to paper,
so they can be read.

These words, now
precious to me,
will help me explain,
what I would like to be.

I hear music, not
a song or a hymn,
but more of a classical,
more like a whim.

A piano concerto,
rings in my head,
telling me to return
to my bed.

What kind of nonsense,
is this I write?
Not words so precious
but words, quite trite.

Eye of Newt,
serpent tail,
and roasted snail,
too churn thy
stomach until
it wails, "Please
let me be."

What kind
of dribble,
are these,
old words,
I write,
bordering
on absurdity.
