Reading as a Lifelong Companion | Kudos365 Life Series
Books have a unique ability to accompany us through every stage of life. They entertain us as children, educate us as students, inspire us during our careers, and often become trusted companions in our later years. Unlike many activities that come and go with changing circumstances, reading remains a lifelong source of discovery, reflection, and enjoyment.
One of the greatest pleasures of reading is that there is always something new to explore. History introduces us to people and events that shaped the world. Biographies allow us to learn from remarkable lives. Novels transport us to different places and times, while books about science, nature, travel, or the arts invite us to see familiar subjects from fresh perspectives. Every book offers the opportunity to learn something we did not know before.
Reading also encourages us to slow down in a world that often moves at a relentless pace. Spending even a few quiet minutes with a good book can become a welcome part of the day—a chance to step away from constant distractions and enjoy uninterrupted time with an idea, a story, or a new way of thinking.
Books also have a way of connecting people. Friends exchange recommendations, book clubs spark thoughtful conversations, and families pass favorite titles from one generation to the next. A well-loved book can become part of a family's story, carrying memories that last long after the final page has been turned.
The opportunities to read today are greater than ever. Public libraries continue to be remarkable community resources, while e-books and audiobooks make it easier to enjoy literature wherever life takes us. Whether reading in a comfortable chair at home, listening during a walk, or carrying a favorite book while traveling, stories and ideas are always within reach.
Perhaps the greatest gift of reading is that it keeps curiosity alive. Every new book invites us to ask questions, discover unfamiliar places, meet interesting people, and consider ideas that broaden our understanding of the world. The more we read, the more we realize there is still to learn.
Reading is more than a pastime—it is a lifelong companion. It asks for very little yet offers knowledge, inspiration, enjoyment, and perspective in return. No matter our age or background, opening a book is an invitation to continue exploring a world filled with ideas waiting to be discovered.

Solar System bodies make deep space exploration more fuel efficient! Today’s video shows the Psyche spacecraft gaining speed and changing its trajectory with minimal fuel spent due to a gravity assist from Mars in May 2026. Mars has an average orbital speed of almost 87,000 km/h (54,000 mph) around the Sun. Its orbital motion and its gravity allowed Mars to pull Psyche along with it, increasing the spacecraft’s speed. Gravity assists have been used since 1959’s Luna 3 mission to allow for spacecraft (the Voyagers, Cassini) to reach farther than they could with fuel alone. This assist helped the Psyche spacecraft on its journey to the Psyche asteroid, which it will reach in 2029. While passing Mars, the spacecraft tested instruments that will analyze the asteroid’s composition and magnetic field. This is the first mission to an asteroid thought to be largely made of metal, an essential building block for planets, rather than rock or ice. Find dark skies and look up this August to witness the Perseid meteor shower uninhibited by the Moon!

Taken on the same night, from the same place, with the same telescope and camera, these postcards from our Solar System are shown at the same scale to provide an interesting comparison of apparent sizes. Spanning about half a degree in planet Earth's sky, the Moon is a stitched mosaic of six images. The others are the result of digitally stacked frames or simple single exposures, with the real distances to the objects indicated along the bottom of each insert. Most of the Solar System's planets with their brighter moons, and Pluto were captured during the telescopic expedition, but elusive Mercury was missed because of clouds near the horizon. The International Space Station was successfully hunted, though. The night was July 21st. Telescope and camera were located at the Centro Astronomico de Tiedra Observatory in Spain. What created this huge space bubble? Blown by the wind from a star, this tantalizing, head-like apparition is cataloged as NGC 7635, but known simply as the Bubble Nebula. Taken from Krakow, Poland, the featured view utilizes a long exposure to reveal the intricate details of this cosmic bubble and its environment. Although it looks delicate, the 10 light-year diameter bubble offers evidence of violent processes at work. Seen here right of the Bubble's center, a bright hot star is embedded in the nebula's reflecting dust. A fierce stellar wind and intense radiation from the star, which likely has a mass 10 to 20 times that of the Sun, has blasted out the structure of glowing gas against denser material in a surrounding molecular cloud. The intriguing Bubble Nebula lies a mere 11,000 light-years away toward the boastful constellation Cassiopeia.

Nassim Nicholas Taleb - is a Lebanese-American essayist, mathematical researcher, former derivatives trader, and public thinker whose work examines uncertainty, probability, risk, and the limits of prediction. He became widely known through a sequence of books collectively called the Incerto, in which he argues that people and institutions routinely underestimate the importance of rare, high-impact events.
Taleb was born in Amioun, Lebanon, in 1960 and was educated in France and the United States. Before turning primarily toward writing and research, he worked for more than two decades in financial markets, including derivatives and options trading. That experience shaped his skepticism toward models that appear precise but fail to account adequately for extreme outcomes, hidden assumptions, and events outside ordinary expectations.
His early book Fooled by Randomness explored the tendency to confuse luck with skill, especially in markets and professional success. In The Black Swan, published in 2007, Taleb developed the idea of a “black swan”: an event that is difficult to predict, has unusually large consequences, and is often explained too confidently after it occurs. The concept became widely used after the global financial crisis, although Taleb’s broader point was not simply that surprises occur, but that institutions often build plans around overly narrow views of uncertainty.
Taleb expanded these ideas in Antifragile, which argues that some systems do more than survive volatility and disorder: under certain conditions, they can benefit from them. He contrasts antifragile systems with fragile ones, which are easily harmed by shocks, and robust ones, which resist change without necessarily gaining from it. His later work, including Skin in the Game, emphasizes the importance of decision-makers sharing the consequences of the risks they impose on others.
His writing combines probability, philosophy, finance, history, and aphorism. He is known for a forceful and often combative style, particularly in criticisms of forecasting, economic modeling, financial risk management, and expert claims that he believes overstate certainty. Supporters value his challenge to complacency and his insistence that real-world risk cannot always be reduced to elegant mathematical assumptions. Critics have questioned some of his broader claims and his sharp public rhetoric, but his concepts have had substantial influence in finance, business, public policy, medicine, and popular discussions of uncertainty.
Taleb has also pursued academic and technical work on probability, nonlinear systems, fragility, and risk. His career reflects a recurring theme in his writing: knowledge should be tested against consequences, and theories about uncertainty should account for the possibility that the most important events may be the ones conventional models fail to anticipate.
His lasting contribution lies in changing how many readers think about prediction. Rather than promising a method for foreseeing every disruption, Taleb argues for building individuals, institutions, and systems that can withstand uncertainty, avoid catastrophic exposure, and remain adaptable when the unexpected occurs.
