Dear Heart
A Comment by Loy
such a beautiful and heartfelt poem
When I see you, my dear heart
And watch as you slowly come apart,
Your memory, once so acutely fine,
Continues into a slow, steady decline.
No, I will never, in my life, understand
Why this disease, with it's cruel demand,
Leaves a shell, that I clearly see,
Why God chose you and not me.
So, I say to, my sweet wife,
My love for you, is for life.
Sometimes, when I am lying in bed,
So many words, cascade within my head.
These thoughts and words, are not renown,
Especially, if I don't write them down.
For words and thoughts with no sound
Will disappear, forever and not be found.
There was a time, when quite young,
I did not think, I would succumb
To the ravages of the aging long.
Now I see, that like the song,
The mirror tells me, I was wrong.
My gravity battle, is a fight of mine,
As my balance, begins it's small decline.
The legs are wobbly and muscles entwine,
As I try walking on surfaces incline,
And end up horizontal and quite supine.
Aging gracefully, is not an easy task,
Your body changes and you must mask,
Aches and pains, that are new today,
Stay with you and won't go away.
Yesterday was today yesterday
And before that, tomorrow.
Today will be yesterday,
As soon as it's tomorrow.
I am mountain, you are sea,
As I thrust gently, upward,
Toward the vast heaven.
Rest you there, without command,
Standing strangely, in this land
Of unrecognized, wonder.
Must you try, to make amends
Or, taking heart, you think of friends,
Who can't take care of you.
I long for the days of old,
When you would talk to me,
Knowing the words to say
And not rely on me
To tell you, what is the day.
Let me sip the nectar
From a hundred silver cups.
Let me taste, the honey,
Produced by all the Bees.
Let me live today, like
Tomorrow will never come.
After I have lived and loved,
With no remorse or sorrow,
Perhaps the love I've shared
Will bring a new tomorrow,
With many a bright beginning,
For in loving, you will find,
Another day for more giving.
The light of the moon, up above,
Brings me happiness, galore,
For I see the face of my love,
Peeking from a secluded door.
Nothing more, than a lovely dove,
Will delay my pleasure to adore.
Escape! Oh, runaway,
Run from me,
Hide from reality.
Gone, away from here,
Thoughts, I once held dear,
Where can I go?
I ask and though,
You come to me,
It can never be.
I don't like this feeling,
Lying deep inside of me,
For my soul feels imprisoned
And aches to be set free.
