Webb's View of M64

Sometimes where Hubble finds darkness, Webb sees light. An example is today’s composite images of Messier 64 (M64), a nearby spiral galaxy of many names. The dark band of dust partially blocking its bright core earned it the moniker “the Black Eye Galaxy.” Webb’s Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) sees that dust, shown in red, as it absorbs and re-emits light from surrounding newborn stars. These young stars are embedded in pink star-forming regions in the secondary Hubble-only image. M64’s inner and outer gas regions counter-rotate, creating regions of increased star formation where the two gas “currents” meet and compress. A merger between M64 and a smaller galaxy was likely the cause of the opposing motion of the outer gas. Spiral galaxies were once thought to have peaceful histories. M64 was key evidence that spiral galaxies, including the Milky Way, can and do experience mergers. Webb’s view of M64 will tell astronomers about the structure, motion, and composition of the galaxy’s dust and add context to the galaxy’s merger history and evolution. 1. Octopuses have three hearts.
Two hearts pump blood through the gills, while a third circulates it through the rest of the body. Their blood also uses a copper-containing protein called hemocyanin to transport oxygen, giving it a bluish appearance.

2. The Moon is slowly moving away from Earth.
Measurements made using reflectors left on the lunar surface show that the Moon is receding from Earth by about 3.8 centimeters—roughly 1.5 inches—per year. Over immense spans of time, this gradual change affects the Earth-Moon system and the length of Earth's day.

3. Bananas are berries, botanically speaking—but strawberries aren't.
Botanical definitions don't always match everyday language. A banana develops from a single flower with one ovary and meets the botanical requirements for a berry. A strawberry is an aggregate accessory fruit, with the small seedlike structures on its exterior actually being individual fruits.

4. The Pacific Ocean is wider than the Moon.
The Moon's diameter is about 2,159 miles (3,475 kilometers). The Pacific Ocean spans many thousands of miles at its widest extent. The comparison sounds surprising because we instinctively think of the Moon as enormous and an ocean as merely a feature on Earth's surface.

5. Some bamboo can grow nearly three feet in a single day.
Certain bamboo species are among the fastest-growing plants known. Under favorable conditions, documented growth rates can approach about 90 centimeters—roughly 35 inches—in 24 hours. Much of this remarkable growth comes from rapidly elongating sections of an already established plant.

6. The fingerprints of koalas can look remarkably similar to human fingerprints.
Koalas have ridged fingertips with loops, whorls, and other patterns that strongly resemble those found on human fingers. These similarities evolved independently, making them an interesting example of unrelated species developing comparable biological features.

7. The Sahara has not always been a vast desert.
Several thousand years ago, parts of today's Sahara contained grasslands, lakes, rivers, and abundant wildlife. Changes in Earth's orbital patterns altered African monsoon rainfall, helping transform this much greener landscape into the extremely arid environment familiar today.

8. The first known vending machine dates back nearly 2,000 years.
The ancient engineer Hero of Alexandria described a coin-operated device that dispensed a measured amount of holy water. Dropping a coin onto a small internal mechanism temporarily opened a valve. The principle—insert payment and automatically receive something—would be perfectly recognizable to a modern vending-machine user.

Gloria Steinem was an American journalist, author, lecturer, and political organizer who became one of the most prominent voices of the modern women’s movement. Through investigative reporting, public advocacy, institution building, and decades of grassroots organizing, she helped bring questions of equality, reproductive freedom, political representation, workplace discrimination, and social justice into the center of American public life.

Steinem’s influence has never rested on a single organization or publication. She has worked across journalism, electoral politics, community activism, and international human-rights movements. Although frequently described as the public face of second-wave feminism, she has consistently emphasized that lasting social change is created collectively rather than by individual leaders.

There was something behind the clouds. Upon close inspection, it was the Moon, which was hard to see yesterday around noon above the small village of Cessy, France. But soon, it was not only the Moon. As expected, a bright dot suddenly appeared from behind the Moon -- the planet Venus far in the distance. Captured in the single featured exposure, both appeared to show a crescent phase. The Moon's crescent was quite slight -- with only about 10 percent of its face illuminated by the Sun. In contrast, Venus's crescent was more full -- showing about 25 percent illumination. Venus appeared brighter because it is nearer the Sun and because its clouds are more reflective than the dark lunar surface. An occultation of Venus by the Moon is visible to only about 10 percent of the Earth, but in yesterday's event even most of that was experiencing daytime.
