 A Pioneer of Abstract Art

Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian-born painter and theorist whose experiments with color, form, and visual rhythm helped establish abstract art as one of the defining movements of the twentieth century. Convinced that painting could communicate emotion without depicting recognizable objects, he sought to give color and line the expressive freedom already found in music.

Born in Moscow on December 16, 1866, Kandinsky spent part of his childhood in Odessa, where he received piano and cello lessons as well as traditional schooling. Music remained a powerful influence throughout his life. He later described colors as possessing qualities similar to musical tones, capable of creating harmony, tension, movement, and emotional resonance.

Kandinsky initially followed an academic career rather than an artistic one. He studied law and economics at the University of Moscow and became sufficiently successful to receive an offer of a university professorship. Nevertheless, his growing fascination with art led him to abandon that path. In 1896, at approximately thirty years of age, he moved to Munich to study painting.
