William McKinley, the 25th president of the United States, is shot and mortally wounded by anarchist Leon Czolgosz at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. President McKinley died days later on September 14. He was the third American president to be assassinated, following Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and James A.
