I wanted a boat to fish from.\r\nI purchased a Ted Williams, 14 foot, aluminum row boat and pair of oars, from Sears Roebuck.\r\nI was employed there and got a nice discount. A friend told me I should have\r\na motor. Coincidentally he had a Vintage, 1947, 5 HP Johnson 2 cycle, water \r\ncooled motor. He told me that it needed a \"quill shaft\" and I had that \r\nwork done in West Seattle.\r\nI waited until after school was out so our Sons and I\r\ncould have a few days off to fish.\r\nI drove over to the Potholes. Don't remember the name\r\nof the lake. I put the boat in the water, loaded the boys\r\nand fishing gear with life jacket. I started the motor\r\nand we were underway, as they say in the Navy.\r\nWe reached our destination and began to fish. Our luck\r\nhadn't been good and was soon to continue the same.\r\nWe decided to return to camp so I attempted to try \r\nto start the motor. No such luck. I grabbed the oars and\r\nslowly began the long row back to our camp. I am sure\r\nit wasn't that far as my memory of that time is \r\nclouded. We packed up and went home as there was\r\na weather front coming in.\r\nWhen I returned to work, the following Monday,\r\nI saw my friend and told him my story. He looked at \r\nme, laughed and said, \" a 1947 5 HP Johnson, requires \r\nyou to loosen the cap on the gas tank. If you don't it will\r\nlock up and it won't start.\" I don't recall using the boat\r\nwith the motor again. \r\nI sold the boat to a friend that lived on\r\nLake Sammamish. If anyone is interested\r\nin a Vintage, 1947 5 HP Johnson, outboard motor,\r\nlet me know as it is still in our garage, complete with\r\na quill shaft. My wife would love to have me move\r\nit from the garage although it is in a place she never\r\nventures. Good boating; Good fishing.\r\n","content_plain":"So many years have gone by when this incident occurred, I\r\nalmost forgot.\r\nOur boys were young and wanted to fish.
