The United States declares war on Austria-Hungary. More
Japan attacks the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. More than 2,400 U.S. servicemen were killed in the attack. Next day, Congress declares war on Japan and on December 11, 1941: Germany and Italy declare war on the United States, and the U.S. officially enters WWII against the Axis powers as it declares war back.
The Japanese attack was preceded by months of negotiations between the U.S. and Japan over the future of the Pacific. Japanese demands included that the U.S. end its sanctions against Japan, cease aiding China in the Second Sino-Japanese war, and allow Japan to access the resources of the Dutch East Indies. More
